Raccoon's Night
by Emma, Daniel & Maddox
One evening Mr. Raccoon was sleeping in his fallen log. When the moon’s silver glow spread across the forest, Mr. Raccoon came out to hunt. Mrs. Raccoon stayed at home to have her babies. Raccoons have their babies in small dark places like fallen logs and that is where the raccoons in this story live.
When hunting, Mr. Raccoon used his long fingers to grab mice off the trail. When he got back home, his wife was moaning so he knew the time was coming soon! The moment was here at last ~ his wife was giving birth! The first one came, then the second and then the third. One was a boy (Cam) and the others were girls (Kristal & Poof). The raccoons left the hollow log because it was too dangerous for babies to live on the ground. One by one Mrs. Raccoon carried her young babies by the extra skin on their backs. Two months later, they moved back into the fallen log.
As the babies grew up they started exploring on their own and learning how to hunt. They grabbed mice and insects on the trail and caught fish in the nearby stream. Each time they caught something they brought it back to the log. They raided bird nests for eggs. Some of the birds were home, so they couldn't take those eggs. One day as the cubs were happily strolling through the forest looking for food, they heard some loud noises and all of a sudden some people spotted them. “Awww what cute baby raccoons. They must be lost! Let's take them to a shelter!”
We interrupt this story for a brief moment to say NEVER bring raccoons you see on a path to a shelter. Wait for a hour or so to see if the adult raccoons come back. Thank You.
The cubs tried to get away but were too slow. Poof tripped over a branch and hurt her foot. The people picked up the cubs and took them to an animal shelter. At the shelter, they spoke to the manager. “We found them on the trail,” the people said. “They might have been waiting for the family" said the ranger. "Please bring them back." As the people started to leave the park ranger called “wait! That one stays here because she is hurt.” So the people left Poof with the ranger. Back in the woods, Kristal and Cam explained in clicking sounds to their dad that Poof had been taken to the shelter where she was recovering from her injury.
Poof was well cared for in a large cage. When she recovered, the park rangers released her back into the woods. She went to her home but all she found was a note that said ~ Poof, we have fled our home because the humans started cutting down the trees. Look for us at the Milliken Mills brick house.
