ABOUT THE HISTORY & PROPERTY
Introduction
Welcome to the history portion of the Milliken Mills Trails website! We hope this will make you want to go to the Milliken Mills Trail.
This property, owned by the Town of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, is located in the northern area of the town, on Portland Avenue in a neighborhood near Milliken Mill Pond and Mill Brook. The woodlots are known as “Milliken Mill woods” and the ”Animal Shelter Area lot.” The town acquired the Milliken Mill Woods in 1999 by way of a gift from Janice Milliken Andrews, brother to Gordon Milliken, the last of the Milliken family to live on the remaining real estate of the Milliken family. The “Animal Shelter Area Lot” was once slated for residential development which failed and the town acquired the property.
The Milliken homestead located on Portland Avenue next to Milliken Mills Pond was built in 1834 by Michael Nason Milliken after returning from a walking journey to Boston, Massachusetts to learn the brick maker’s trade. The Milliken family owned much of the northern corner of town that has since been divided among many owners. The woodlots the town now owns at one time were included in the Milliken holdings.
The Old Orchard Beach Historical Society holds more information about the family and the history of the town. The woodlots are easily accessed from downtown Old Orchard Beach (OOB) as well as Saco and Scarborough via Portland Avenue and the connecting side roads. A parking area is easily found at 192 Portland Avenue. The lots provide a convenient site for taking a short walk in the Animal Shelter Area or longer walk in the Milliken Mill Woods.
