ABOUT THE FOREST
People cut down trees to use for lumber. We use lumber to build houses. There are many kinds of trees in Milliken Mills conservation area. They include hardwood and softwood varieties. Loggers use an axe to chop down trees and cut up the sticks and twigs. We are making a bench out of spruce which will be on display in the park. The Milliken Mills area has more pine trees than spruce trees.
Hardwood = maple, oak, birch trees and beech
Softwood = white pine, hemlock, pitch pine, spruce and balsam fir
They're going to cut those kinds of trees and use them for lumber.
The parts of wood: bark, cortex, phloem, cambium, sapwood, Heartwood, Pith and more! (See diagram below.)
